Halcyon smyrnensis
Identity and identification
White-throated Kingfisher Halcyon smyrnensis belongs to Alcedinidae. Chestnut head and body contrast with a white throat and breast, blue back and wings and a large red bill. It differs conspicuously from smaller Common Kingfisher and black-and-white Pied Kingfisher. The sexes look alike in the field. It is placed in the order Coraciiformes. The IUCN category carried in AviList 2026 is Least Concern (LC).
Habitat, food and behaviour
It is not confined to water margins, using farmland, orchards and open ground near channels. From a branch or wire it watches and dives onto prey. Large insects, lizards, amphibians and other small animals supplement available fish; it is not exclusively a fish eater.
Breeding and parental care
A tunnel excavated into an earthen bank ends in an egg chamber. References report clutches of three to seven eggs. Both parents incubate and provision young inside the chamber. Chicks develop in the nest before emerging; opening a tunnel for photography destroys necessary protection.
Range and Arab occurrence
Its range extends from the eastern Mediterranean through parts of the Middle East to southern Asia. Lebanon’s 2020 checklist records it in most months without then confirming breeding. Documented occurrence should therefore be distinguished from a claim of proven Lebanese breeding residence.
Seasonality and observation
It can be observed throughout the year in resident areas. Loud calls and exposed lookout perches aid detection. A November sighting at an eastern site alone does not reveal whether an individual is resident or moving; observations across seasons are more informative.
Ecological role and conservation
Its varied prey connects it to agricultural food webs. Bank levelling removes nesting opportunities, while pesticides and polluted water are pressures. Stable earthen banks, safe perches and varied vegetation support the bird without disturbing nests.
