Identity and identification

The Pallid Harrier is a slender Accipitridae raptor. Males are pale grey with narrow black wingtips, while brown females and juveniles resemble other harriers more closely. Head, wing and tail features should be assessed together before identifying brown birds.

Habitat and food

It hunts low over plains and grassland, taking rodents, small birds, reptiles and insects. The importance of different prey varies between breeding and wintering grounds, rather than remaining uniform everywhere.

Breeding and development

It nests on the ground among grasses in its Eurasian breeding range. The Peregrine Fund reports 3–6 eggs, incubated by the female for about 29–30 days while the male supplies food. Chicks first fly at about 6–7 weeks and remain with their parents for several more weeks before independence. Winter presence does not imply local nesting.

Arab occurrence and seasonality

Lebanon’s 2026 guide describes uncommon but regular passage and rare winter presence. Qatar’s list and Oman’s 2026 list instead describe common passage and winter visits. November encounter prospects therefore differ between the Levant and Gulf; Lebanese rarity should not be extended to Arabia.

Observation and conservation

The Pallid Harrier is globally classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. Important threats include grassland conversion and degradation through overgrazing and fire. Its grasslands and fields benefit from vegetation retention and reduced poisoning and disturbance. For an uncertain identification, several views from a safe distance are more useful than chasing a bird for a closer photograph.
