Cecropis rufula
Identity and identification
European Red-rumped Swallow Cecropis rufula belongs to Hirundinidae. A rufous rump and nape accompany pale underparts and a long forked tail. Rump, nape and nest structure distinguish it from Barn Swallow. It was separated from Eastern Red-rumped Swallow Cecropis daurica; old records require geographic and taxonomic interpretation. It is placed in the order Passeriformes.
Habitat, food and behaviour
It catches flying insects over farmland, valleys and open country, sometimes joining other swallows near water. Buildings, bridges and cliffs provide nest sites. Mud and nearby food are complementary resources; a bridge alone does not ensure a colony.
Breeding and parental care
The enclosed mud nest has a tubular entrance, resembling a flask attached beneath shelter. The pair builds and tends young, provisioning insects. An intact nest can retain value in later seasons. Occupancy must be checked before maintenance work.
Range and Arab occurrence
Its range includes southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, extending east into Asia. Lebanon’s checklist uses rufula for an uncommon migrant breeder and passage migrant. BTO confirms its separation from the eastern species; historical names must not be counted as additional species.
Seasonality and observation
Lebanese breeding extends from March to August, with passage mainly in March–April and September–October. November follows most usual local occurrence, while seasonality differs elsewhere. Document rump, nape and tail rather than general colour in flight.
Ecological role and conservation
It consumes aerial insects and is affected by their decline and nest destruction during bridge or building maintenance. Retaining sound nests, delaying work around occupied ones and reducing pesticides help. Observe entrances at a distance without obstructing parents.
